So now that you have an idea of what ThinkBuddy is and what it does, here’s my honest breakdown:
What I Love About ThinkBuddy
✅ Keyboard Shortcut King: ThinkBuddy is all about efficiency. They’ve integrated keyboard shortcuts for almost everything, from running prompts to accessing features. It’s a game-changer for speed demons like me.
✅ The Quick Menu Magic: Highlight any text, and bam! A menu pops up with your pre-set prompts. It’s like Wordtune on steroids, but it goes beyond grammar fixes to offer a whole range of actions. Need to whip up a quick email reply? Highlight, select, done.
✅ No API Key, No Problem: This was a pleasant surprise. No need to shell out extra for usage, which is a huge plus. While I prioritize output quality and am happy to pay for it, ThinkBuddy currently uses the original models without extra cost. This might change, so keep that in mind if it’s a dealbreaker for you.
✅ High-End Model Support: ThinkBuddy doesn’t skimp on the good stuff. They offer access to powerhouses like Claude Opus and GPT-4 Turbo, along with favorites like Sonnet 3.5 and GPT-4o.
✅ Multi-Model Mayhem: Want to compare outputs from different models? ThinkBuddy has you covered. Their “remix” feature even combines the best parts automatically. Talk about a time-saver!
✅ Screenshot and Insert Simplicity: A small but mighty feature. Capture a screenshot, and it’s instantly available within the app. It’s all about streamlining those micro-tasks.
✅ Webpage Whisperer: Feed ThinkBuddy a URL, and it devours the information, making it readily available for your prompts. I’ve been using it to grab product details from AppSumo – incredibly handy stuff.
Where ThinkBuddy Stumbles (Cons of ThinkBuddy):
⚠️ Text Expander Troubles: My biggest gripe? Text expanders like Apple Text Expander don’t play nice within the chat window. It’s manual copy-pasting for now, which disrupts my workflow.
⚠️ Prompt Library Limitations: While in the chat, I can’t access my prompt library for quick inserts. Usually, I’d use Typedesk, but as mentioned, text expanders are a no-go.
⚠️ Rewriting Roadblocks: I’d love an auto-replace function for edited text. Currently, it’s a two-click process of copying and pasting the revised content.
⚠️ Screenshot Snafus: The screenshot feature is acting up, capturing my desktop wallpaper instead of the intended window. Might be a Mac accessibility issue, but still frustrating.
⚠️ Markdown Mishaps: Copying and pasting responses sometimes messes with the formatting, particularly headings and bullet points.
⚠️ Image Upload Only: No direct image pasting in the chat. An extra upload step is required.
A Note of Caution About ThinkBuddy (Read the Fine Print!)
ThinkBuddy’s landing page has a disclaimer about future LLM access. While they currently offer GPT-4 and Opus, access to future models like GPT-5 might come at an additional cost. They assure users that feature updates and model access won’t differ between lifetime and monthly subscribers, but the disclaimer remains.
This isn’t a dealbreaker for me, as I’m a heavy user and will likely break even quickly. However, it’s something to consider if you’re a light user or hesitant to commit long-term.
Final Verdict
ThinkBuddy is a productivity powerhouse with a few quirks to iron out. The keyboard shortcuts, quick menu, and model variety are fantastic, but the text expander issues and potential future costs require careful consideration.
In short, ThinkBuddy is a promising tool for Mac users who want a centralized and streamlined AI experience. If you value efficiency, enjoy experimenting with different AI models, and appreciate a native MacOS feel, ThinkBuddy is worth a serious look. 👀
However, if you heavily rely on text expanders or are hesitant about potential future costs for accessing new AI models, you might want to wait and see how ThinkBuddy evolves.
